How to Replace a PSP Charger Socket

The Sony PSP is a handheld gaming device that is powered by a battery. The battery is charged using a power adapter. It is possible for the socket that connects the power adapter to fail or break. If this happens. it is best to send the PSP back to Sony if it is under warranty. Disassembling the PSP will void the warranty, but it is possible to replace the charger socket yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug your PSP console. Grasp the small Phillips screwdriver and unscrew the seven screws on the rear of the PSP.

      Pull the faceplate off by pulling on the bottom of the faceplate.

      Find the button bar at the bottom of the LCD screen.

      Grasp the small flathead screwdriver and insert it under the lip of the left side of the button bar, pushing it under the button bar until it detaches from the LCD screen housing.

      Carefully unplug the cable by lifting the tab upwards and sliding the cable out.

      Grasp the small flathead screwdriver and insert it between the LCD housing and the mounting bracket. Slowly pry the LCD housing away from the mounting bracket. You will feel the tabs popping as the LCD housing is released.

      Repeat Step 6 for the other side of the LCD housing.

      Lift the LCD screen up at a 90-degree angle.

      Pull the clamps up and slide the cable out to remove the LCD.

      Grasp the Phillips screwdriver and use it to remove the screws holding the LCD brace onto the PSP.

      Grasp the flathead screwdriver and pry up the LCD brace.

      Press the latch opening up the UMD door and remove the latch through the opening.

      Find the directional pad and grasp the Phillips screwdriver. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws holding the directional pad onto the PSP.

      Tilt the directional pad up and use the flathead screwdriver to pry up the brown release bar, then pull the cable out.

      Unhook the power cable from the motherboard.

      Grasp the flathead screwdriver and place it underneath the circuit board to the left of the yellow charger socket and pry up the circuit board, making sure the top clears the peg at the top of the board.

      Use your finger to slide the right trigger button up and out.

      Grasp the Phillips screwdriver and use it to remove the screw to the left of the charger socket.

      Use your fingers to lift up the motherboard and pull the charger socket out of the connector holding it to the motherboard.

      Install the replacement charger socket and repeat the steps in reverse order to put the PSP back together.
