How to Get the PSP to Connect to WPA

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) or wired equivalent privacy (WEP) protects a wireless Internet connection from outside access. The WPA or WEP key acts like a password and prevents unauthorized network access. In order to connect any device, including a Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP), to a password-protected router, you will need to enter the WPA or WEP key. Locate the key by accessing the wireless settings on the router. Once connected, save the settings on the PSP for future online play.

Instructions

  1. Connecting to Internet

    • 1

Press the "Home" button in the lower-left corner of your PSP then select "Settings" followed by "Network Settings."

    • 2

Select "Infrastructure Mode" in the "Network Settings" menu. Infrastructure Mode helps you connect to the Internet through a Wi-Fi connection. "Ad Hoc Mode" is the other option. Select this only when trying to connect your PSP to another PSP.

    • 3

Select "New Connection" then press the "X" button to submit your selection. Give the connection a name that is easy to remember. For example, if this is your home Wi-Fi connection, consider naming it "Home" or if you're at a friend's house, name the connection after your friend. Press the "X" button when done. The PSP will then perform a network scan. When done scanning, all the available networks will be listed, including WEP or WPA networks.

    • 4

Select the correct network by pressing the directional arrows on the PSP followed by the "X" button. Using the keyboard screen, type the WPA key then press "Enter". Once connected to the Internet, the PSP screen will display a "Setting List." Press the right arrow button to save your settings and begin using the Internet.

    Finding WEP or WPA Key

    • 5

Open a web browser on a computer already connected to the WEP or WPA network. In the address bar, type "http://192.168.1.1" then press the "Enter" key to access the default IP address for your wireless router.

    • 6

Enter your user name and password to access the Wi-Fi settings, including the WPA or WEP key. If you don't know your user name and password, try entering the default user name and password for your router. The most common default user name is "admin" and the two most common default passwords are either "admin" or "password." If you can't locate the user name and password, reset your router by sticking a pin in the small hole in the back of it. Press and hold down the reset button for 15 seconds. Once it reboots, the router will be restored to its default factory settings.

Press the "Security" or "Wireless" tab under the "Wireless Settings" icon and locate the WPA or WEP key.
