How to Change a PSP Joystick

Every time you play your favorite PlayStation Portable (PSP) video game, your joystick is experiencing wear and tear. The PSP joystick's elevated position and high propensity to be jostled back, forth, left and right makes its lifespan much shorter than the other controls on the device. Fortunately, replacements are available and can be installed within twenty minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Small Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Two clean container lids
  • Replacement PSP joystick

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the five screws that hold the PSP faceplate on the device. One is located at the bottom of the case. Two and three are located on the right side of the back plate: Look just beneath the left shoulder button and then vertically downward from that screw is the other, which is beneath the warranty sticker. Four and five are visible in the inlet beneath the battery.

    • 2

Place the PSP on a flat surface, face down and unfasten the fives screws. Put the screws in the first container lid for safe keeping.

    • 3

Turn the PSP face up and gently pry the front casing away from the unit. This leaves the internal components exposed to dirt and other contaminants. Protect your device by working in a clean, dry area.

    • 4

Remove the two screws holding the joystick in place and put them in the second container. The joystick now lifts easily out of the PSP casing.

    • 5

Insert the new joystick and replace the two screws to attach it to the PSP.

    • 6

Snap the faceplate back onto the PSP and replace the five screws.
