How to Fix a PSP 2000: I Tried a Blank Screen and I Think Its Bricked

Sony PSP 2000's can become bricked, or completely inoperable, when the device becomes corrupted during a software update. This situation is evident when the PSP 2000 is turned on and the screen stays blank. Other than sending the device into Sony for them to fix it, you can use what is known as a PSP service tool to reinstall the software and get the PSP 2000 up and running once again.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place the PSP 2000 on its screen-side and remove the battery cover. This reveals the PSP 2000 battery. The battery pops out when pulling the top edge of the battery towards you. Pull it out.

    • 2

Insert the magic memory stick into the PSP 2000's memory card reader with the PSP 2000 turned off. Insert the service battery into the PSP 2000, and the PSP 2000 turns on. The service menu is displayed.

    • 3

Press the "X" button to reinstall the PSP 2000 firmware. This is what un-bricks the PSP 2000. Press the "X" button to complete the installation.

    • 4

Wait for the prompt from the installer to press the "X" button again to shut off the PSP 2000, and press it. Wait for the PSP 2000 to shut off.

    • 5

Press the battery cover release button to remove the cover and pull out of the service tool battery. Insert the default PSP 2000 battery.

    • 6

Turn the PSP 2000 on and the screen will now go from completely blank to displaying the PSP 2000 welcome screen.
