How to Disassemble a PSP 1001

The PlayStation Portable, Model 1001, contains both electronic parts as well as a mechanical optical drive. Disassembling the PSP allows you to thoroughly clean it out or replace a defective part so that it will continue functioning over its life span. The disassembly procedure is involved, but straightforward, and requires only household tools.

Instructions

    • 1

      Place a hand towel on a table. Place the PlayStation Portable (PSP) face down on the towel with the battery compartment lid on the left side. Remove the lid. Remove the battery pack.

      Scratch the sticker inside the compartment with the tip of a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove the screws from inside the compartment and from beneath the scratched sticker. Open the side memory stick compartment lid. Remove the memory stick.

      Remove the exposed screws from the top edge opposite the battery compartment and from the bottom edge opposite the battery compartment as well, using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Repeat this procedure with the screws on the top and bottom edges of the PSP.

      Turn over the PSP unit. Place the PSP on the towel with the disc drive edge facing away from you. Pull the faceplate off the top of the PSP.

      Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the seam between the black bottom bar and the bottom case of the PSP. Run the tip along the length of the bar to loosen it. Pull the bar out of the PSP. Release the latch on the bottom right of the PSP, with your fingers, where the wire attached to the bar goes. Place the bar aside.

      Place the screwdriver tip into the seam at a top corner of the LCD screen. Run the tip along the length of the LCD screen to loosen it. Repeat this procedure at the bottom and at both sides of the LCD screen.Pull the LCD screen off. With your fingers, release the latch where the wire from the LCD screen goes onto a circuit board on the PSP. Place the LCD screen aside.

      Remove all of the exposed screws that are visible, using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Insert the tip of the screwdriver into a corner of the metal bracket that is on the right side of the PSP. Lift up on the tip to loosen the bracket. Pull off the bracket.

      Release the latch where the wire from the bracket goes onto a circuit board on the PSP. Place the bracket aside. Repeat this procedure with the bracket that is on the left side of the PSP.

      Insert the tip of the screwdriver beneath the black power plug on the right side of the PSP. Lift up on the tip to loosen the plug. Pull off the plug. Remove the bracket that is beneath the plug. Pull the attached wire off the PSP. Place the bracket aside.

      Insert the tip of the screwdriver beneath the white release latch that is now visible. Lift the tip to loosen the latch. Pull the cable out of the latch. Repeat this with the latch to the left of the one just released.

      Insert the tip of the screwdriver beneath the circuit board at the lower left of the PSP. Lift up on the tip to raise the board. Pull the two speakers out from beneath the board. Pull the wires coming from the speakers out of the latch on the circuit board.

      Run the tip of the screwdriver around the sides of the circuit board in a clockwise direction and then along the top of the PSP. Lift the circuit board off and place it aside.

      Remove the screws now exposed at the upper left and lower left of the PSP, using the screwdriver. Pull the metal top bracket off and place it aside. Pull the plastic bracket out from beneath. Remove the board from beneath the plastic bracket.

      Remove the screws now exposed on the right side of the PSP. Pull the plastic bracket off the PSP. Pull the wire coming from the bracket out of the circuit board to its left.

      Remove the screws from the center of the PSP that are now exposed. Lift the metal frame off the top and place it aside. Pull the cable out of the latch on the left side of the metal frame that just had the screws removed.

      Place the tip of the screwdriver into the spring on the bottom right corner of the metal frame. Pull the spring out, using the tip of the screwdriver.

      Insert the tip into the door edge of the disc drive at the top center of the PSP. Lift up on the tip to loosen the drive. Pull the metal bracket and drive out of the PSP. Remove all of the exposed screws inside the PSP that are now exposed. Pull the bottom circuit board out of the PSP.
