Board Games for PSP

The PlayStation Portable, also known as the PSP, is Sony's portable video game system and was released in 2005. While many of the titles developed for it attempted to push the technical capabilities of the device as far as possible, there were also classic board games making the jump into the digital age. New technology has allowed classic games to be played in new ways and with new twists, giving new life to old favorites.
  1. Scrabble

    • Electronic Arts's PSP version of Scrabble includes the classic version of Scrabble, but also includes a speed mode and a new SLAM mode based on the Scrabble Slam card game. Multiplayer modes can include four-player Hot Seat -- where players pass the PSP around -- and head-to-head Ad Hoc play -- each player has his own PSP. Games can also be played against the adaptable computer artificial intelligence in single-player mode.

    Chessmaster: The Art of Learning

    • Ubisoft released Chessmaster: The Art of Learning for the Sony PSP in 2008. This chess game allows players to compete against 24 different artificial intelligence profiles from easy to very hard. Players can also play against real players in local connections. Chessmaster: The Art of Learning also features author Josh Waitkin's chess training program which offers interactive advice to improve play. Other game modes include puzzle challenges, dark chess, losing chess, extinction chess and progressive chess.

    Blokus Portable

    • Blokus, the board game first introduced in 2000, was brought to the Sony PSP by Majesco Entertainment. In the PSP edition of Blokus, the original four-player version of the game is present, along with a two-player version. Players can earn "dollarinos" which are used to unlock items to customize their character's appearance. Up to four players can play in Ad Hoc mode with only one game disc.

    Ultimate Board Game Collection

    • In 2007, Valcon released their Ultimate Board Game Collection for the Sony PSP. This game includes 24 different classic board games in one title. Classic games such as Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Reversi, Parcheesi, Go, Dominos, Chinese Checkers and Mahjong Solitare are all included as well as others. Each game is playable against the computer or up to six live players depending on the game. Each game can be customized by selecting different game pieces, rules and environments. Each game has a specific goal and trophy that is unlocked upon successful completion. There are also four user selectable soundtracks within the game.
