The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a handheld gaming device that is sold all over the world. One of the advantages of the PSP is that there is no region lock for games. This means that North American gamers can play Japanese games and vice-versa. A number of interesting games were only released in Japan and are available for import.
  1. Shining Hearts

    • Shining Hearts is a traditional role-playing game developed my Sega. It has an overhead 2D perspective with menu-driven battles. You take the role of a young man named Rick who takes a job working at a bakery. You will carry out missions and battle monsters while developing a relationship with one of the three girls working at the bakery. You'll need to be able to read Japanese to fully enjoy this game, as role-playing games tend to have large amounts of text.

    Darius Burst

    • Darius Burst is a side-scrolling shooter developed by Taito. It is the newest iteration in an ongoing series that saw its debut on the Sega Saturn. Players progress through levels in a spaceship, shooting enemies and evading attacks. You will need to continuously upgrade your ship as you progress in order to deal with increasingly difficult enemies. Unlike previous installments, the PSP game features 3D graphics.

    The Dog: Happy Life

    • Following in the tradition of popular pet simulators such as Nintendogs, The Dog is a Japan-only PSP game that allows players to select from one of 16 breeds of dog; players raise their dogs, teach them tricks, dress them up in accessories, and design their rooms. You can also take pictures of your dog in different stages of development. Players can even transfer their dog to a PC or cellphone. This game is made by Yuke's Media Creations.

    Last Ranker

    • Produced by Capcom, Last Ranker casts gamers as Zig, a warrior striving to be the a top ranked fighter. This is a role-playing game with expected tropes such as random battles and customization, and features a dynamic action-oriented battle system. As players progress, they will unlock new moves for Zig. In addition to working your way up the ranks, players can undertake side quests and unravel the game's story.
