How to Make a Magic Memory Stick on 3.73 OFW

Custom firmware for the Sony PSP allows you to run user-made homebrew applications in addition to official Sony applications on the handheld device. To upgrade to custom firmware, you need to turn your Memory Stick Pro Duo memory card into a "magic memory stick," which allows you to use a Pandora battery and install the non-official firmware. Any firmware version below 5.00 can use Rain's UltraLife MMS Maker to accomplish this.

Things You'll Need

  • Official Firmware 5.00
  • Rain's UltraLite MMS Maker
  • Unzip program
  • USB cable

Instructions

    • 1

Download the official firmware 5.00 and Rain's UltraLife MMS Maker files (see Resources for links).

    • 2

Unzip both files with an unzip program such as WinZip or WinRAR.

    • 3

Connect your PSP to your computer with the USB cable.

    • 4

Turn on your PSP, and select "USB Connection" from the "Settings" tab to put it into USB mode.

    • 5

Run the "RainUltraLiteMMS.exe" file on your computer.

    • 6

Check the "Format Memory Stick" checkbox, and click "Make MMS."

    • 7

Select the official firmware 5.00 reboot file from you download location when prompted to. The memory stick will then be formatted and converted to a magic memory stick.

    • 8

Disconnect your PSP when the MMS Maker window says "Make MMS is Finished." You can then use a Pandora battery with your PSP and continue to install a custom firmware.
