How to Create a Magic Memory Stick for the PSP With a Computer

Some users prefer to modify their console and handheld video game systems, expanding the capability of the system beyond the manufacturer's design. Using a device called a Pandora's Battery, you can softmod (not permanent) your PSP handheld system, opening up new features. When modding your PSP with a Pandora's Battery you must create a Magic Memory Stick, which allows you to pre-load the new firmware from the Pandora's Battery. Creating a Magic Memory Stick is a straightforward process.

Things You'll Need

  • Memory Stick Pro
  • PSP USB cable

Instructions

    • 1

Open your browser and download the TotalNewbi Easy Installer (see Resources). Save the file to your computer desktop.

    • 2

Right-click the TotalNewbi Easy Installer folder and select "Extract All." Click "Next" and select your desktop as the extraction destination. Click "Next" then click "Finish" to extract the files.

    • 3

Insert a Memory Stick Pro in your PSP and turn on the system. Press the "Home" button in the bottom-left corner of the system.

    • 4

Scroll over to "Settings" and scroll down to "System Settings" using the directional pad. Press the "X" button.

    • 5

Select "Format Memory Stick" and press "X" again on the PSP. Wait while the system formats the Memory Stick Pro. Do not remove the Memory Stick Pro while the system formats it. Note that formatting erases any information on the Memory Stick Pro.

    • 6

Restart the PSP system and scroll down to "USB Connection." Press "X." Connect your PSP to your computer using a PSP USB cable.

    • 7

Click "Start" and select "Computer" on your PC. Make a note of the drive letter assigned to your connected PSP.

    • 8

Double-click the "Newbie Easy Installer" folder on your desktop tand locate the "start.exe" file within the folder.

    • 9

Right-click "start.exe" and choose "Run as administrator." A black command prompt window with instructions will appear.

    • 10

Press "Enter" twice to advance the menus. Enter the drive letter (from Step 7) of the PSP at the command prompt and press "Enter." For example, if "F" is the drive letter assigned to your PSP, then type "F" and press "Enter."

    • 11

Remove the Memory Stick Pro from the PSP and unplug the PSP USB cable from your computer. Press "Enter" on your keyboard.

    • 12

Re-insert the Memory Stick Pro and select "USB Connection" from the main menu again (see Step 6). Reconnect the USB cable and press "Enter" on your keyboard.

    • 13

Press the "1" key on your keyboard to choose the first option, and press "Enter." The program will copy the necessary files to the Memory Stick Pro, creating a Magic Memory Stick for the PSP. Do not disconnect the PSP while this process takes place; the process can take over an hour.

    • 14

Disconnect the PSP once the process finishes.
