How to Take Apart a PSP 1000 for Repair

The PSP 1000 (also called a PlayStation Portable) is a handheld video game console made by Sony Computer Entertainment. The device has an LCD screen and is the first hand-held gaming console that uses optical discs. If your Sony PSP is not functioning correctly and you want to repair the device yourself, you'll need to disassemble the PSP to work on the system components. This is not recommended if your PSP still is under warranty or if you do not have experience working on complex electronic devices.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the PSP on a clean, flat surface with the LCD screen facing down.

    • 2

Disconnect the charging cable. Press the battery hatch button, then slide the hatch away from the PSP and lift to remove it. Remove the battery.

    • 3

Remove the two screws in the battery bay with the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 4

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the seven case screws from the back of the PSP -- there are four black screws and three silver screws. Set aside the screws.

    • 5

Flip the PSP over so the screen is facing up. Lift the faceplate off the PSP.

    • 6

Insert the tip of the flathead screwdriver under the left side of the button bar at the base of the LCD screen. Apply pressure to lift it up, freeing it from the metal LCD housing. Lift the tab holding the button bar cable in place, then disconnect the cable. Set the button bar aside.

    • 7

Slide the tip of the flathead screwdriver into the bottom left gap between the LCD screen and the LCD mounting bracket. Lift the LCD screen up to pop the tabs holding it in place. Pull the right side of the LCD screen out.

    • 8

Tilt the LCD screen forward (toward you) to reveal the ribbon cable connectors. Lift the tabs on both ribbon cable connectors and slide the ribbon cables out. Set the LCD screen aside.

    • 9

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the seven screws that hold the LCD mounting bracket in place. Pry the left side of the mounting bracket up with the flathead screwdriver. Wiggle the LCD mounting bracket until it comes free, then set it aside.

    • 10

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw holding the directional pad in place. Tilt the directional pad to the right, then disconnect the directional pad ribbon cable by lifting up on the connector tab. Remove the directional pad assembly and set it aside.

    • 11

Locate the wide, gray power switch ribbon cable on the right side of the PSP. Lift the latch securing the power switch ribbon cable in place, then slide out the ribbon cable. Lift the power control board up by inserting the tip of the flathead screwdriver under the bottom left corner and applying gentle pressure until it comes free. Pull it up. Remove the right trigger contact from the top edge of the PSP. Lift the power control board free by peeling the adhesive ribbon cable off the PSP case.

    • 12

Remove the screw from the yellow power connector with the Phillips screwdriver. Lift up and move the wire out of the way, but do not disconnect it from the motherboard.

    • 13

Lift up on the Wi-Fi antennae cable. Peel back the sections of black tape holding the antennae in place and move the antennae out of the way, but do not disconnect.

    • 14

Remove the silver screw from the top right corner of the motherboard with the Phillips screwdriver. Gently disconnect the two ribbon cables (connected to the laser and UMD motor) and the two plug cables (each connected to a speaker) from the motherboard.

    • 15

Lift the left side of the motherboard upward gently, then tilt the motherboard away from you to make sure the motherboard is not connected to the daughterboard. Pull the motherboard toward you and lift up to allow the external USB connector to fit through the upper edge of the PSP case.

    • 16

Remove the three silver screws holding the daughterboard in place with the Phillips screwdriver. Lift up and away from you on the daughterboard to remove it from the PSP case.

    • 17

Lift up on the PSP case and push the tip of the flathead screwdriver against the bottom left corner of the UMD door until it drops away from the PSP case. Turn the PSP over and remove the UMD door by sliding right and then away from the PSP case.

    • 18

Remove the four screws from the UMD assembly with the Phillips screwdriver. Lift the UMD assembly away from the PSP case to complete the disassembly process.
