How to Empty a PSP Memory Stick

The Sony PlayStation Portable offers great flexibility as a multimedia device by storing videos, music, games and more on Memory Stick Pro Duo flash cards. This means that over time your Memory Stick might get full, and you will need to empty it to add more files. You may also want to remove all your PSP data to use memory for other purposes. There are various ways you can ready the Memory Stick for use again. You can overwrite all data by formatting the Memory Stick, or you can remove all files and folders using your PC. Removing individual files is easily done on the PSP.

Instructions

  1. Formatting Your Memory Stick

    • 1

Go to the "Settings" menu on your PSP home screen, and scroll down to the "System Settings" option.

    • 2

Select the option "Format Memory Stick" in this menu.

    • 3

Confirm that you want to format the Memory Stick. This will remove all data from the stick, but reinstall empty PSP folders. If you want to completely empty the memory stick for use outside of a PSP, it is best to do it on your PC.

Emptying the Memory Stick Via Your PC

    • 4

Plug your PSP into your PC using a USB cable.

    • 5

Select "USB Connection" in the "Settings" menu on your PSP home screen.

    • 6

Open up the Memory Stick folder on your PC once your PC recognizes and loads it.

    • 7

Highlight all the folders or files that you want to remove from the Memory Stick, and delete them.

    • 8

Press the "O" button on your PSP to end the USB connection and safely remove your PSP from your PC.

    Removing Files Individually

    • 9

Navigate to the file that you want to delete in your PSP home screen.

    • 10

Press the "Triangle" button to display the file menu.

    • 11

Select "Delete," and confirm that you want to delete the file. This method has the benefit of allowing you to only remove the files that you want to, and not all at the same time. It is clear on the PSP what each file is, which is not the case when viewing the Memory Stick's contents on your PC.
