How to Connect an Xbox Controller

Whether you have an original Xbox gaming console or the newer Xbox 360, a controller is required to interact with your games. The original Xbox was released with a classic wired controller, while the Xbox 360 came with the option of a wired or wireless controller. Unfortunately, original Xbox controllers cannot be connected to an Xbox 360.

Instructions

  1. Connecting an Xbox Controller to an Original Xbox

    • 1

Connect all parts to the Xbox controller, including the second half of the cord that connects to the inline release.

    • 2

Grasp the end of the controller cord and insert the open end securely into an empty controller port on the front of your Xbox.

    • 3

Ensure that the end of the cord is inserted firmly into the controller port before using the controller.

Connecting a Wired Controller to an Xbox 360

    • 4

Flip up the small door at the bottom of the front of your Xbox 360 console to reveal two USB ports.

    • 5

Insert the end of your wired controller into an open USB port until the cord is secure.

    • 6

Use the wired Xbox 360 controller now that it has been connected properly.

Connecting a Wireless Controller to an Xbox 360

    • 7

Insert AA batteries into the back of the wireless controller.

    • 8

Press and hold the Xbox Guide button in the middle of your wireless controller until the green light flashes.

    • 9

Turn on your Xbox 360 console. Press and hold the connect button next to the memory card ports on the front of your console.

    • 10

Press and hold the connect button on the top of your wireless controller. Use the controller with your console once the green flashing lights on both units cease spinning.
