How to Configure an Xbox Controller on Windows XP

The "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows" is a basic Xbox 360 controller packaged with a USB wireless receptor that must be connected to your computer. It is compatible with both Windows XP and Windows 7. After the installation, the controller will work with most PC games that support third-party controllers. It might not be perfect, so you might need to calibrate the analog sticks if you want to get the most out of your controller.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" button in the taskbar. Click "Run". Enter "joy.cpl" and click "OK." This will open the "Game Controllers" window.

    • 2

Click "XNA Gamepad" and select "Properties."

    • 3

Click the "Settings" tab. Click "Calibrate." The "Device Calibration Wizard" will open. From here, you will need to enter the displayed joystick motions and input commands as they are requested on screen. When finished, click "Apply."

    • 4

Use the onscreen controller to test to compare the functionality of your controller and the controller on screen. When you're satisfied, click "OK." Click "OK" again to confirm the changes.
