How to Fix a Loose Nintendo 64 Controller

As Nintendo's popular fifth-generation N64 console continues to age, many players find that wear and tear has taken its toll on the system's controllers. A common problem is a loose analog stick that no longer centers on the controller. This greatly affects the precision of the controller and can make some games completely unplayable. Nintendo's customer support department has long ago stopped performing N64 repairs, so gamers are more often than not left to their own devices when it comes to faulty hardware. Luckily, fixing the controller is a fairly simple process that can have your controller working like new in a few minutes.

Instructions

  1. Repairing Your N64 Controller

    • 1

Unscrew all nine screws located on the back of the N64 controller. There are two located on the left grip, two on the right grip, one on the center grip, two in the center of the controller, and two smaller screws located in the Rumble Pak cavity. Place the screws aside.

    • 2

Pull the back off of the controller carefully. The thumbstick module is the gray plastic casing located just above the center grip, with the Z button attached.

    • 3

Pull the Z button from the tabs that hold it in place in the thumbstick module. Make sure not to damage the cable connecting the Z button to the circuit board.

    • 4

Unscrew the three silver screws located on the left, right and bottom of the thumbstick module. Place the screws aside. Do not unscrew the small black screw located near the bottom of the module.

    • 5

Unplug the module from the blue circuit plug located just to the right of the thumbstick module. Remove the module from the controller and set it aside. It should come out easily, but take care not to cause damage to the circuit board.

    • 6

Place the new module into the controller. Plug it into the blue circuit plug.

    • 7

Insert the three silver screws into the left, right and bottom of the new module. Place the Z button into the tabs in the center of the module.

    • 8

Replace the back of the controller. Return the nine controller screws to their original positions.
