How to Repair Xbox Controllers

Is your Xbox controller acting a bit odd? Are the buttons sticking? There are two main causes to your controller not functioning, the first one is spilling soda pop on the controller during a Halo binge. The other is just wear and tear. Sometimes the rubber contact cups underneath the buttons will tear, which is not good. But, if your buttons are sticky, this is no problem, fixing your own Xbox controller is an easy task, and takes only a few minutes to do. Here I will outline everything you will need to do to get your Xbox controller working again.

Things You'll Need

  • A Screwdriver (A magnetic screwdriver helps a ton, but it’s not required.)
  • Warm Soapy Water
  • A Sponge

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the controller from the Xbox.

    • 2

Push all of the buttons on the controller. You will need to get an idea of which buttons are not acting quite the way they should. Once you are inside of the controller, this will give you a general idea of where to look to see what is wrong.

    • 3

Turn the controller over, setting it on its top. You will now be looking down on the bottom of the controller.

    • 4

Locate the screw holes on the back of the Xbox. There will be a total of seven screw holes on the back of the Xbox controller. There is a sticker covering the screw hole on the bottom of the controller, which can easily be removed.

    • 5

Remove the screws from the screw holes. The screws on an Xbox controller may be a little bit stiff. If you put some muscle into it, they should come off pretty easily.

    • 6

Grasp the controller by both sides. Flip it over onto it's face, with the screw holes facing down.

    • 7

Remove the face plate. The buttons might spill over the side, but this is OK. You needed to remove them anyway.

    • 8

Grab all of the buttons and rubber cups that the buttons are sitting on. As you are removing the rubber cups, check the cups of the afflicted buttons. If any of them are torn or disfigured in some way, you will need a new controller.

    • 9

Using warm soapy water and a sponge, clean all of the debris and sticky material from the green board underneath the buttons. Pay special attention to the button areas that did not feel quite right when you pushed them.

    • 10

Let dry. Make sure that the main board on the controllers is completely dry before you re-assemble. You do not want to plug a controller in that is still wet, lots of bad things could result.

    • 11

Reverse the above directions to get the controller back together. The rubber cups are interchangeable and the buttons are keyed so that it is impossible to put them back in wrong.
