An Action Replay Is Not Recognized by My USB

When your computer doesn't recognize the Action Replay via USB, it cripples the device's usability. The Action Replay device works in two ways: you can use it to enter cheat codes into a game and to load hacked save files -- often called Power Saves -- onto the device for use in your favorite game. It also allows you to copy and back up your existing save files. You might be having trouble because of the USB connection itself or because of issues with your software.
  1. Testing the USB Connection

    • The most likely reason that your computer can't see the Action Replay is trouble with the physical USB connection. Check the USB cable itself; is it firmly plugged into both your computer and the Action Replay device? If it is firmly seated, check for damage on the cable or any loose connections. Check that both the USB port and the port on the Action Replay are clean and clear of debris.

If everything is in good working order and connected properly, try a different USB port directly on the computer; do not use a USB hub. You want the most direct connection when using the Action Replay.

    Operating System Issues

    • If you've recently upgraded your computer to run Windows 7, you'll need to make sure you're using the most recent drivers for the Action Replay. First insert your Action Replay CD into your computer. Open the Start Menu and select "Control Panel." Open the "Device Manager" and double-click the Action Replay device. Choose "Driver," then "Update Driver." Choose to search your computer for the driver updates, press "Next" and select "Have Disk." Browse the CD to find the file "dsiarhwprog" or "dsiarhwprog_x64" if you're using the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Open the file and confirm the driver installation.

Note that the Action Replace Code Manager software only works on Windows computers and will not function if you're using OS X or Linux.

    Removing from Console

    • Make sure that you've disconnected the Action Replay from the console in question before connecting it to your computer. Even if the device is turned off, the Action Replay cannot be plugged into the console and the USB port. Turn off your console before removing the Action Replay to avoid damaging your data. The only time you should connect the Action Replay to both console and computer is when using Updating Mode.

    Updating Mode

    • The Updating Mode on the Nintendo DS edition of the Action Replay is one that manages firmware updates for the Action Replay device. With the Action Replay software installed on your computer, connected the Action Replay to the computer and -- on the DS -- click the mouse icon to enter Updating Mode. Watch the status bar on the bottom screen while updating; this will be red while updating, then turn green when the update is complete.
