How to Make a Racing Chair From PVC

PVC pipe is a versatile and sturdy material. For gamers and fans of racing games in general, the material is ideal for making a custom racing chair. Placing the virtual driver directly behind the wheel, these chairs are relatively lightweight and inexpensive to construct. As a result, gamers can even transport their custom chairs to friends' houses for custom LAN race matches.

  • Racing pedals
  • Steering wheel
  • Schedule-40 PVC pipe

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the PVC pipes to create the side and the back supports. Cut these to the dimensions that best fit your selected padded racing seat.

    • 2

Cut additional pieces to form the triangular footwell. Ensure the width of the footwell accommodates the dimensions of the pedals you use with your rig. You will have two pieces set at 45-degree angles, one horizontal piece spanning these at the top, two downward supports and a base piece in front of these.

    • 3

Cut two additional horizontal pieces to support your steering wheel.

    • 4

Lay out the remaining pipes and joints on the floor to visualize the final assembly.

    • 5

Assemble the seat frame and footwell, pre-gluing the inner flange of each fitting prior to sliding the pipes in place.

    • 6

Set the chair, wheel and pedals in place to complete the racing chair frame.
