How to Make Joystick Covers

The first electronic game was created by Willy Higinbotham in 1958. The first joystick was created in 1962 for the video game "SpaceWar!" The game used five different toggle switches. Since then, video game consoles and joysticks have evolved exponentially, and their costs have grown, as well. Since joysticks can cost as much as games themselves, it is advisable to make covers for your joysticks to protect them.

Instructions

  1. Cardboard Cover

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your joystick, using a ruler. For reference, use the dimensions of 2 inches by 3 inches by 6 inches.

    • 2

Cut cardboard pieces using scissors. Cut two pieces to a length of 2 inches and a width of 6 inches for the sides. Cut two pieces to a length of 2 inches and a width of 3 inches for the ends. Cut two pieces to a length of 3 inches and a width of 6 inches for the top and bottom.

    • 3

Place the bottom piece flat on a level surface. Place the side and end pieces vertically on the edges of the bottom piece. Tape the edges together using duct tape. Place the top piece on the edges of the side and end pieces and tape the edges together, which makes a cardboard box with the dimensions of 2 inches by 3 inches by 6 inches.

    • 4

Cut the duct tape around the edges of the right-end piece, using a utility knife. Do not cut the duct tape from the bottom edge. This makes a flap on the right side of the box to insert and remove the joystick. You now have a cardboard joystick cover.

    Sculpey® Mold Maker™ Clay Cover

    • 5

Dust the exterior of the joystick with talcum powder, using a brush. The talcum powder prevents the joystick from bonding to the Sculpey® Mold Maker™ clay.

    • 6

Press Sculpey® Mold Maker™ clay around the entire exterior surface of the joystick.

    • 7

Cut a line around the Sculpey® Mold Maker™ clay mold to make two halves, using a utility knife. The line makes a top cover and a bottom cover.

    • 8

Pull the top and bottom covers from the joystick. Remove the talcum powder from the exterior of the joystick, using a soft cloth.

    • 9

Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F for five minutes. Place the Sculpey® Mold Maker™ clay on top of an aluminum foil sheet on the center tray of the oven. Once the oven is preheated, bake the Sculpey® Mold Maker™ clay at a temperature of 275 degrees F for 20 minutes.

    • 10

Remove the mold from the oven and let it cool for one hour. You now have a Sculpey® Mold Maker™ clay joystick cover.
