How to Manually Reset a PlayStation 3 Wireless Controller

Wireless PlayStation 3 controllers use Bluetooth technology to link up with your PlayStation 3. Connectivity issues can arise when a PS3 controller is used on several consoles. The response of the buttons and joysticks can also become unreliable and affect your gameplay, and the controller may even fail to connect to your system. A synchronization reset brings the controller back to its factory condition, and once it is reset, you can reconnect it to your console.

Things You'll Need

  • Standard-size paper clip
  • USB cable that comes with the PS3

Flip your controller upside down and locate the tiny round "Reset" button just to the right of the middle screw.

Unbend the paper clip and use the tip to carefully push the "Reset" button in. Use minimal pressure and listen for a click, which indicates that the button was pressed correctly.

Power on the PlayStation 3 and use the USB cable to connect the controller to the console. Plug the small end into the input on the front of the PS3 controller that's just above the Sony logo. Plug the other end into one of the inputs on the bottom left of the PS3's front.

Press the PS button on the top side of the gamepad. The four tiny lights just to the right of the USB port will briefly flicker red, indicating your controller is now synced to the console.
