How to Fix a PS3 Controller X Button

Buttons on a video game controller are more likely to get stuck as the oils in your hand transfer onto the controller. The oils cause dirt particles to adhere to the button, and prevent it from going in and out of the button mechanism. Cleaning the buttons prevents this situation, but fixing it requires delicate work around the buttons with rubbing alcohol.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Cotton swab
  • Small cup

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the PS3 controller from the PS3 system by simply disconnecting the mini-USB cable from the top of the controller.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol into a small cup or container. Dip the end of a cotton swab into the alcohol.

    • 3

Rub the alcohol soaked swab around the "X" button. If a small amount drips inside of the controller, it is fine as it will dry immediately.

    • 4

Push down on the "X" button using the cotton swab to release a small amount of the alcohol onto the "X" button. Flip the other side of the swab over and use the dry side to rub the button clean and dry.

    • 5

Allow around five to ten minutes to pass for the alcohol to break up any dirt particles preventing the button from working correctly.
