How to Fix a Sticking Joystick

The first gaming joystick control dates back to 1958, thanks to Willy Higinbotham, an American physicist. As the field of electronic gaming progressed, the design and technology used in game pads and joysticks improved as well. A sticking joystick or game pad button control may be attributed to tacky substances that may prevent or inhibit proper operation of the device. Cleaning unwanted debris or dried liquids from joystick's movable control surfaces will likely rectify the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the joystick from the game console or computer, if applicable. If the controller uses a wireless interface to connect to the game console or computer and requires removable batteries for operation, remove the batteries before cleaning.

    • 2

Examine the rear of the controller and remove the screws securing both halves of the device together, using an appropriate size screwdriver.

    • 3

Separate the front half of the joystick from the base.

    • 4

Remove the offending protective rubber or plastic joystick knob from the electronic circuit board. Take note of the original mounting points of the joystick knobs or buttons, prior to removal. Consider removing all the external knobs or buttons for cleaning to avoid possible short-term operational problems, arising from the existing unwanted substance.

    • 5

Soak the sticky joystick knobs and buttons in a mix of warm water and dish soap. Depending on the substance adhered to the surface of the knobs and buttons, soak the components for several minutes.

    • 6

Clean off the sticky substance from the buttons and knobs with a sponge. Rinse and dry the components, using clean water and a lint-free cloth. Clean off any debris on the front joystick cover, using the sponge and cloth; be careful not to wet any internal electronic components affixed to the cover, during the cleaning process.

    • 7

Dry off any remaining moisture present on the joystick components.

    • 8

Reassemble the joystick to complete the process.
