How to Charge a PS3 Contoller Without a USB

Using the included USB cable to charge your Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) controller can be cumbersome. First you have to plug it into the controller and the console, then you have to make sure you leave the gaming system on. If you turn the system off and put it in standby mode, your controller won't charge. Many PS3 users find it easier to purchase a separate charging dock that allows them to simply place two or more controllers on the dock to begin charging.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a charging dock. You can buy a dock from Sony or from one of many third-party companies that also make charging docks for PS3 controllers. Most allow you to charge two controller at once, but many have ports for four controllers. Purchase one that is powered by an A/C adapter that plugs into your wall outlet. Some charging docks are meant to plug into the USB port on your PS3 console, and you will have to leave your system on for the charger to work.

    • 2

Plug in the dock and put your controller in one of the docking ports. The port will have a protruding plug that connects to the mini-USB port on your controller.

    • 3

Leave the controller in the charger for two to three hours. Most charging docks have an indicator light that changes color or flashes when the controller is fully charged.

    • 4

Remove the controller from the dock when it is fully charged, or unplug the charging dock.
