Instructions
Sit properly behind the drums. You should center your body with the kit, and make sure that your seat is the correct height. The drums should sit slightly below wrist height so you can drop the stick down onto the head.
Hold the sticks correctly. Turn your hand so that your palm is facing up, and rest the stick on the middle of your hand, parallel to your thumb. Curl your remaining fingers so that your fingertips rest lightly on the stick, and turn your hand back over to play.
Understand that more motion will make drumming more difficult. Rock stars perform big movements for dramatic effect, but faster and more accurate drumming comes from small and controlled movements.
Pay attention to your foot pedal technique. Don't lift your foot and stomp down on the pedal with each hit because it will tire you out very quickly. Instead, keep your foot in light contact with the pedal at all times, and press down with the ball of your foot to hit the note.
Practice often. You will learn the songs so you can anticipate the rhythms, and strengthen the muscles in your arms and hands. It may sound cliche, but practice is the only way to truly get better at the drums.
