How to Solder a Controller

Video game controllers contain many wires that are attached to a circuit board contained within the plastic controller case. If the wires detach from the circuit board, the controller won't work. Some wiring problems can be fixed by soldering a detached wire to the circuit board. This bonds the wire to the circuit board and reconnects the flow of electricity, making the controller work once again.

Things You'll Need

  • Small screwdriver set
  • 15- to 25-watt soldering gun
  • 60-40 rosin-core solder

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws holding the controller case together with a screwdriver. Set the screws aside.

    • 2

Pull the controller case apart, being careful to not damage any wires or pull any wires off the circuit board inside the controller.

    • 3

Lay the controller on the ground so the broken wire faces up.

    • 4

Position 60-40 rosin-core solder above the broken wire and touch it to the circuit board.

    • 5

Touch the tip of a 15- to 25-watt soldering gun --- sometimes called a soldering pencil --- to the solder. The solder will melt and adhere to the broken wire where it meets the circuit board. Hold the soldering gun to the solder until only one or two drops of solder are created. Make sure the detached wire is touching the circuit board while soldering. If needed, hold the wire to the circuit board using your fingers.

    • 6

Let the solder cool for at least 30 minutes. Once the solder cools, it forms a solid bond that permanently adheres the wire to the circuit board, which reforms the connection.

    • 7

Reassemble the controller case and insert and tighten the screws.
