How to Troubleshoot the Wii Guitar

Players of the "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero" series of games use a special guitar controller. The Wii version of these controllers connects to the console through the Wii remote. There are two major areas that cause issues with the Wii guitar controllers. The first issue is compatibility. The controllers used in the two games are similar, but not exactly the same. In some cases the issue is the game being played does not support the controller. The second area is the Wii remote. These issues can include dead batteries, the remote not being synced to the console or the remote not being attached correctly to the guitar.

Instructions

Check if the guitar is compatible with the game being played. Any "Guitar Hero" Wii guitar controller should function with any "Guitar Hero" or "Rock Band" game. Any "Rock Band" guitar controller, except the "Rock Band 3" controller, should work with any "Rock Band" game. "Rock Band" controllers are not compatible with any "Guitar Hero" game. The "Rock Band 3" guitar controller is only compatible with "Rock Band 3." It does not work with any other "Guitar Hero" or "Rock Band" game.

Remove the back panel from the guitar controller. This allows the Wii remote to be removed from the guitar.

    • 3

Remove and reinsert the remote. If the guitar functions correctly now, it means the issue was with the remote not being fully inserted into the slot. You can reattach the back panel at this point if your issue has been resolved. Otherwise remove the remote again.

    • 4

Replace the batteries in the Wii remote. If the Wii remote functions properly, the issue was with the batteries. The batteries do not need to be completely dead to cause issues with the guitar functionality. If the remote turns on but does not do anything, the issue is with the remote syncing to the console.

Press the red "sync" button on the Wii. It is on the front panel next to the SD slot. You can access the button by removing the cover next to the disc slot, under the power button.

    • 6

Press the sync button on the remote. It is under the battery cover. The lights on the remote should blink for a few seconds. The remote is synced to the console once the blinking stops.

    • 7

Reinsert the Wii remote into the slot on the back of the guitar. Ensure it is securely connected to the slot.

    • 8

Reattach the back panel to the guitar controller.
