How to Erase an N64 Memory Card

The Nintendo 64 uses a memory card, known as a Controller Pak, that connects directly to the controller and stores saved game data. If the card is full of data and has no more free space, you'll need to erase some data before you can save any new games. Game data is often accessible from the Controller Pak menu, which displays before you load the game. You must use the game's menu for any games that don't provide access to the Controller Pak menu.

Instructions

  1. Controller Pak Menu Access

    • 1

Insert a game into the Nintendo 64 console.

    • 2

Insert the Controller Pak into the back of a controller, and plug the controller into the "Player One" port on the Nintendo 64 console.

    • 3

Press and hold the "Start" button on the controller. Turn on the Nintendo 64 console while you're holding the "Start" button.

    • 4

Release the "Start" button after the Controller Pak menu appears. If the game loads instead, the Controller Pak menu is not accessible from this game.

    • 5

Highlight the file you want to delete from the Controller Pak menu and select "Delete."

    Game Menu Access

    • 6

Insert a game into the Nintendo 64 console. Let the game load up to the main menu.

Click the game's "Options" menu (or a similarly titled menu) to access your game files. Each game has a different menu system -- consult the game's manual for the exact instructions.

    • 8

Highlight the file you want to delete and select "Delete."
