How to Make a PS3 Mod Controller

Your controller is the key element connecting you to your game. Using a modified controller can enhance your game play and increase your level of fun. The rapid fire modification is by far the most popular mod for the PlayStation 3 controller, but it can be difficult for the average person as it requires an ability to solder several wires together in extremely small places. Do-it-yourself modification kits are available. These kits take the guess work out of the modification process, remove the risk of damaging your controller, and enable you to make a modified controller with ease, at a fraction of the cost for a pre-modified controller.

Instructions

    • 1

Charge and sync your controller with the PS3.

    • 2

Open your PlayStation 3 controller. There are five screws strategically placed, one on the top and bottom of each hand grip and another on the top middle area, on the underside of the controller. Remove these five screws using the screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the bottom shell of the controller. Use caution while taking the controller apart. Place your controller face down on your work space. Move the battery to the left of the controller to expose the motherboard.

    • 4

Confirm that you have a compatible controller. Your controller should have the points "TP17", "TP18" and "TP20" to the right of the microchip or main integrated circuit, the small black square in the center of the motherboard.

    • 5

Identify the IntensaFire LED portion of the flex board. This is the long thin leg attached vertically to the IntensaFire chip. Insert this under the motherboard above the area where the player "3" and "4" lights are located.

    • 6

Fold the flex board over the top of the motherboard and tuck it under the battery clip. Remove the tape from the PS3 IntensaFire chip.

    • 7

Position the chip on top of the main circuit (the small black square in the middle) with the white connection facing towards the bottom of your controller. Gently push down on the chip to fix it in place. Be careful not to twist the chip or apply too much pressure.

    • 8

Replace the battery. Fit the bottom shell of the cover over the buttons and triggers and put it back together. Replace the five screws.

    • 9

Power on your controller. Hold down the left "D" pad until the "player 3" light turns on. Confirm your IntensaFire chip is operational and choose your operating mode.
