How to Watch Live TV on an Xbox Media Extender

In October 2004, Microsoft released the Xbox Media Center Extender. This device was an add-on to Microsoft's original Xbox console that allowed it to stream Windows Media Center from a computer on the same network. In addition to adding DVR functionality, it also allowed users to stream music and movies from their Windows PCs to their Xbox consoles. While Microsoft tried to make the setup process as painless as possible, it still took considerable knowledge and some users had trouble getting the features to work properly.

Install the TV tuner card into your PC. Installation instructions vary by PC and tuner type. Refer to your manual.

    • 2

Connect a coaxial cable to the TV tuner card.

    • 3

Connect your Xbox to your home network through the Ethernet port on the back of the console. The Ethernet port is used for both wired and wireless connections, as the Microsoft Wireless-G Xbox Adapter connects to the game console via the Ethernet port. Make sure your Media Center PC is also attached (wired or wireless) to the network.

Connect the Xbox Media Center Extender to your Xbox and insert the Media Center Extender Xbox disc. Upon turning on the console, you will receive a message with a setup code. Write this code down for reference.

Type in the set-up key. After typing in the code, the PC will connect to the Xbox.

    • 7

Go back to the Xbox and you will have Windows Media Center on the screen. Select "My TV" from the menu, then choose "Live TV" to start streaming live television on your Xbox.
