How do I Configure a Saitek 2900?

Playing a game using the Saitek P2900, also referred to as the 2900, can be frustrating if the preset button configuration isn't ideal for the game you're playing. The Saitek P2900 is a wireless PC game controller that has two analogue joysticks, an eight-way directional pad, six face buttons and four trigger buttons. If these are assigned incorrectly, it's easy to find yourself instinctively pressing the wrong button in a tight spot. Reassigning the buttons can help solve this problem; you can set the Saitek P2900 up to any configuration that suits your game or playing style.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the Saitek Smart Technology Programming Software that came with the controller. This is on the same disc as the drivers and instruction manuals. Follow the onscreen instructions during the installation. "Agree" to license agreements, select a destination folder for the software's program files and click "Next" to advance to the next screen. If you haven't installed the drivers for the controller, do so now.

    • 2

Insert the USB attachment and connect the controller. Do this by pressing the "Channel Scan" button on the controller, which is located directly to the right of the directional pad. The wireless icon should be lit up green or amber, depending on battery level.

Press the "FPS" button on the controller to set the configuration for a standard first person shooter game. The "FPS" button is red and located on the right-hand side of the controller. See the user manual for the specific button assignments associated with this configuration.

Open the Saitek Smart Technology Programming Software by right-clicking the controller icon in your toolbar and selecting "Profile Editor." A grid will appear onscreen, displaying the names of buttons on the P2900. There will be several "Modes" listed along the top of the grid. You can configure the buttons for one specific game to one of the "Mode" columns or alternatively group games by genre.

    • 5

Click on the space below the name of the button you wish to configure, in the desired "Mode" column. This sets the corresponding button on the controller for programming. Press the button on the computer keyboard that you want this button to represent. The name of the key you pressed will appear in the field. Click on the tick sign to confirm the button assignment.

    • 6

Configure the remainder of the buttons in this way. You can add multiple keys or combinations of keys to any one button. For example, if you wish to program "Ctrl" and "R," just hit the keys as you would to perform the action on the keyboard. The process is the same as for programming a single key.

Click the "Save" button at the top of the "Profile Editor" screen to store the profile to the PC. Type in the desired name for this profile, which is generally the name of the game for which you are configuring the controller. "Save" the profile when you are done.

Right-click the controller icon on the toolbar. You will notice that the new profile name is listed on the menu. Click it to activate the profile.
