DIY Pad for Dance Dance Revolution

If you use DDR occasionally, a soft pad might be sufficient for your needs, but avid "Dance Dance Revolution" users will get better use out of a hard pad because it is more durable and offers an experience that more closely mimics arcade play. If you bought one in a store or online, it could cost you about $100, but you can make your own for little to no cost at all.

Things You'll Need

  • An old Dance Dance Revolution pad that works
  • 36-inch-by-36 inch piece of plywood, 1/2-inch thick
  • 36-inch-by-36 inch piece of acrylic, like Plexiglas, 1/8-inch thick
  • 36-inch-by-36 inch custom-printed pad graphic
  • 4 #8 Philips wood screws
  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • Drill
  • Aluminum foil

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the plastic hardcover of the old DDR mat and remove the computer board from inside. You will use this, as well as the cover itself, in your customized DDR pad.

    • 2

Cut open the old pad and extract the foam from inside. Cut the foam into 10 sections, one for each button. Each button should be approximately the same size as the buttons on your original pad -- eight square pads and two smaller rectangular pads. Note the sizes and positions of your foam and double-check that your customized pad image matches each button placement.

    • 3

Solder your category 5 cable to each connection point on the computer board that you removed. It does not matter which cable goes where, as long as a cable is soldered to each connection point.

    • 4

Cut two equal-size pieces of aluminum foil for each button. Fit each pair to match the size of each foam cutout.

    • 5

Lay the fitted aluminum foil pieces below and above each foam cutout. The foam will be between the two pieces of foil.

    • 6

Tape the edges of each button separately to the plywood.

    • 7

Connect each category 5 cable that is soldered to the computer board, to the top layer of foil on each button. Tape these down securely with cloth adhesive tape.

    • 8

Replace the plastic hardcover around the computer board.

    • 9

Lay your customized graphic on top.

    • 10

Lay the acrylic sheet on top of your customized graphic.

    • 11

Drill pilot holes into the corners of the acrylic to match the size of the screws you are using.

    • 12

Connect the top layer of acrylic sheet to the bottom layer of plywood with screws.

    • 13

Plug in your customized DDR pad and play!
