How to Make the PS3 Guitar Hero & Rock Band Guitar Compatible

EA's "Rock Band" and Activision's "Guitar Hero" video games enable PlayStation 3 owners to play along with hundreds of popular rock songs using wireless guitar controllers. Though the games' controllers are very similar, legal issues prevented game developers from making the controllers compatible with each game for some time. In 2008, however, a software update allowed greater guitar compatibility between the games. This lets gamers play games from both series without having to spend money on new guitar peripherals.

Choose the right guitar controller for your game. The "Guitar Hero: World Tour" and "Guitar Hero 3" controllers will work with all "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" games. The "Rock Band" and "Rock Band 2" controllers will not work with "Guitar Hero 3" or "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith," but will work with "Guitar Hero: World Tour."

Ensure that you plug the correct wireless signal adapter into your PS3. No matter what game you are playing, you must use the wireless signal adapter that came with the guitar you wish to use in order for the guitar to function properly. A "Guitar Hero: World Tour" controller will not function with a "Rock Band" adapter, even if you are playing "Rock Band."

Download the latest "Rock Band" software update to ensure that your controllers are compatible. The "Guitar Hero 3" and "Guitar Hero: World Tour" controllers will only work with the updated 1.01 version of "Rock Band" and "Rock Band 2." To update your software, connect your PS3 to the Internet following the instructions in the PS3 manual, and insert the "Rock Band" or "Rock Band 2" game disc. Follow the on-screen instructions to update your game.

Contact the manufacturer of your guitar controller if you continue to have compatibility issues, since this may indicate a faulty controller.
