How to Take Apart Xbox Controllers

The original Xbox controller is fairly simple to take apart when compared to many other game controllers (including the newer Xbox 360 controller). The main reason is that the original Xbox controller does not use security or specialty screws. Therefore, you can take it apart with basic household tools. Pay attention to the placement of each controller component as you take it apart: this will help you tremendously when you are reassembling the controller.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the controller from your Xbox and bring it to a flat workspace, such as a table. Turn the controller over to expose the rear side.

    • 2

Remove the five visible Phillips screws from the back of the controller. Place the screws in a cup or other container for safe keeping.

    • 3

Peel off the silver Xbox sticker on the back of the controller. Behind this sticker, you'll find an additional Phillips screw. Remove it.

    • 4

Lift the back cover straight up to remove it. This exposes the interior components of the controller, including the circuit board and the rumble pack.

    • 5

Lift the entire circuit board and components from inside the controller. Set the items to the side. Now you'll have access to the interior buttons and pads.

    • 6

Pull the button pads and buttons straight off to remove them.

    • 7

When you are ready to reassemble the Xbox controller, reverse the steps exactly.
