Loose Connection
Action Replay DS cartridges are not officially issued and may sometimes not fit perfectly in Nintendo DS. A good way to tighten the fit of the cartridge is to wrap it in electrical tape. If the connection between Action Replay DS and your PC is loose, disconnect and re-connect the USB cable to fix it; if USB connections are repeatedly becoming unstable, you may need to replace the USB cable at a camera or electronics store.
Outdated Firmware
Newer Nintendo DS games and consoles contain successive code revisions intended to reduce the functionality of devices like Action Replay DS. Circumvent this by upgrading or re-installing the firmware, which can also fix errors caused by corrupt codes. The firmware of your Action Replay DS is upgraded in the device's "Reading" mode: Turn on the Nintendo DS while holding "A" and "B," then tap the green "Mouse" icon. Connect to your computer via USB and launch the Action Replay Code Manager software. Click the "Upgrade" icon to download the latest firmware, then click it again to transfer this firmware to your Nintendo DS.
Corrupt Codes
Codes that are incorrectly input into your Action Replay DS can cause problems for the device. Corrupt codes can become stored in the device's memory and spread to other data, including other codes or even device firmware. Remove the risk of corrupt codes by only entering codes through the Code Manager software: never input codes using the "Manual Entry" mode that does not require your Action Replay DS to be connected to your computer.
Wrong Game Version
Action Replay DS's manufacturers seek to provide a comprehensive database of cheats for every Nintendo DS game available. As such, there are many confusing overlaps in the game list. If you have downloaded or input cheats for a game and find that these cheats are unavailable when you insert the game, you may have accidentally added cheats designed for the Asian or European version of the game. If you are using Action Replay DS with games purchased in the U.S., check that the cheat codes are for the U.S. or (U) version of the game.
Outdated Code Manager Software
Action Replay DS relies heavily on connection to a PC running the Code Manager software for the device. As such, it's important to be sure you are running the latest version of the software. Go to the site in Resources to download the latest version of the software and check regularly at the "Support" section of the site for newer versions. To install new software, download to your computer and double-click to unzip, then run the file "Setup.exe."
