The Tools Needed to Softmod an Xbox

While Microsoft doesn't officially endorse "soft-modding" an Xbox, many users are willing to take the risk of modifying their console to turn the Xbox into a high-powered media server. Soft-modding also allows you to gain access to the console's operating system and install third-party software, but doing so may irreversibly damage your gaming console and will void your warranty.
  1. Flat-Head Screwdriver

    • To access the screws that seal your Xbox's external case, you need a flat-head screwdriver. The flat end will help you remove the rubber foot pads glued to the bottom of your Xbox, revealing the six screws underneath -- one on each corner and two in the middle of the console.

    Torx Screwdriver Set

    • You'll need a set of Torx screwdrivers to remove the star-shaped Torx screws on the case and the Xbox console's internal electronics. Torx 20, 15 and 10 screwdrivers fit the screws on the Xbox's hard disk drive and ribbon cable.

    Burning CDs

    • The Xbox reads single-layer CDs, which is the format to use when burning the soft-mod software to a CD, as dual-layer CDs and DVDs won't register with the Xbox's hardware. Microsoft doesn't officially support any soft-modding software or devices, so by choosing to soft-mod your console, you're assuming some risk of potential damage.

    Desktop Computer and IDE Cable

    • An Integrated Drive Electronics cable allows communication between a hard disk drive and a computer. You will need to remove the HDD from your desktop and replace it with the HDD from your Xbox. The IDE cable will connect your Xbox's HDD to your computer's CD-ROM drive and the Xbox's motherboard. The Xbox can't select a boot file from a CD the way your computer can. By connecting your Xbox's HDD to your computer, you can boot from the soft-mod CD and flash the Xbox's HDD with the soft-mod software.
