How to Get the Internet on a TV Using a Game Console

New video game consoles, including the PlayStation 3, XBox 360 and Nintendo Wii, are Internet-ready systems. On each system, you use the Internet to connect to other online gamers. You can also use your gaming console as an Internet portal to browse the Web on your TV.

Instructions

Verify that your Internet connection is accessible near your TV. The PS3, XBox 360 and Wii have wireless network adapters, so your wireless network must reach the area where your TV is set up. If you are using a wired connection, you will need cables that are long enough to reach between the gaming console and your router.

Connect the gaming console to your television using its included cables. The XBox 360 and PS3 have options for either composite connections (the red, white, and yellow cables) or for high-definition media interface (HDMI) cables. Select the connection that works best for your TV. If you have a wired Internet connect, connect the network cable into the back of the console.

Turn on your TV, then power on the gaming console. Press the "Source" button on your remote to set the TV's input for the console. When the console turns on, look for "Internet." On the Wii, look for the "Internet Channel;" on the PS3, find "Browser." For the XBox 360, you need to install Windows Media Center and a specific "MCE Browser" service on your computer. Access the Media Center through the "Media" menu on the XBox 360.

Use the browser on your console to look at websites. The browser on each console varies in terms of functionality. The browser for each system is similar to what you might install on your computer. Streaming sites and interactive websites use programming languages that a console's browser can't read. But the console's browser will work for basic browsing and checking email.
