How to De-Yellow a SNES

De-yellowing your SNES console can be done with some creative working of household products. It's entirely an aesthetic problem; your SNES console won't work any more efficiently when you remove its yellow tint, but it won't look like it's been sitting around for decades either. Due to the materials put into the plastic to make it flame retardant, the plastic will turn yellow over the course of many years.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 heaped tbsp. Xanthan Gum
  • 1 level tsp. Glycerine
  • 1/4th tsp. Oxy laundry booster
  • 500ml 10-15% Hydrogen Peroxide solution
  • Blender
  • UV lamp

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the exterior of your SNES console thoroughly. You don't want any spots to be missed by the solution due to dirt or grime.

    • 2

Mix the Hydrogen Peroxide and Xanthan Gum in a blender. Blend on high speed for five seconds.

    • 3

Add the Glycerine into the mixture and blend for another five seconds on high speed. Wait for one minute, then blend again for five seconds on high speed. The mixture should have become a smooth gel.

    • 4

Add the Oxy solution once you're ready to apply it and blend on high speed for five seconds. Otherwise you can store the mixed solution in a dark jar. If you add the Oxy, you have to use the mixture; it will become inert and won't work if you try to store it.

    • 5

Apply the gel to the exterior of your SNES console. Don't worry about applying too much; the solution can't be used again. Just be sure to cover all its parts. Make sure you don't get any gel into the cartridge slot.

    • 6

Put the console under a UV light, or sunlight. Leave the console exposed for as long as you can; after 24 hours or so you can wipe off the solution. Your console should look brand new. If it has severely yellowed, you may have to reapply another batch of the solution.
