How to Telnet an Xbox

If you have access to a remote server and an old Xbox, you can give your old console new life by using it to connect to the networked server via Telnet. Once you're connected to the networked server, you'll be able to access remote files and folders. To connect to Telnet, you will need to modify the console so that you can install the emergency version of Linux.

Things You'll Need

  • USB thumb drive
  • Cable that connects a USB drive into an Xbox
  • Xbox
  • Save game image from "MechAssault"
  • Computer
  • "MechAssault" DVD
  • Linux

Instructions

    • 1

Download the save game image from "MechAssault" from Xbox-HQ to your computer and save it to a folder on your desktop for easy access. Download the small version of Linux from Damn Small Linux to your PC and put it in the same folder.

    • 2

Plug the USB thumb drive into the USB cable. Plug the cable into the Xbox. Start your Xbox so the thumb drive will be reformatted. After it's reformatted, it will appear on the Xbox dashboard.

    • 3

Turn off your Xbox and disconnect your USB cable and thumb drive. Copy the "save game" image from "MechAssault" and the small Linux operating system from your computer to your thumb drive.

    • 4

Plug the USB thumb drive back into the USB cable, and plug the cable into the Xbox. Start the Xbox. Wait for the Xbox Dashboard to appear. You will see the contents of the thumb drive on the dashboard. Your thumbdrive won't be reformatted when you plug it back in because the console will see that the drive has already been formatted for use with the system.

    • 5

Copy all the files from the thumb drive to the Xbox's hard drive. Run the "save game" image from "MechAssault" by inserting your "MechAssault" DVD into the Xbox.

    • 6

Look for "Emergency Linux" on your dashboard and select it. Your Xbox will restart and instead of seeing your dashboard, you will see Linux booting.

    • 7

Access Telnet via its default address, 192.168.0.3, and log in with the username "root" and password "Xbox."
