How to Softmod an Original Xbox

Modding your Xbox by using a fake game save allows you to open up possibilities with your Xbox without having to take the case off or solder anything onto the inside. A mod on your Xbox allows you to play back-up copies of games you own, run emulators and run modified copies of games such as "Halo." Softmodding for the Xbox is loading a fake game save into the Linux operating system that some games use to run. With practice, it can be done in less than ten minutes.

Things You'll Need

IRC client
FTP client
Original copy of Tom Clany's Splinter Cell
Xbox memory card

Instructions

  Download an "All In One" exploit package. To do this, open your IRC client and navigate to "/server irc.efnet.net." Then type "/j #xbins" followed by "/msg xbins !list." You will then receive a private message with the location and log in for the FTP server where you can download the package. Once you are connected to the FTP server, navigate to "/Xbox/exploits/_Packages/Softmod Installer Deluxe/" and download the file named "Softmod.Installer.Deluxe.v2.0.Xbox-Hq.rar".

  Extract the two Splinter Cell files from the file. These are called "SID.Splinter.Cell.v2.0.Xbox-Hq.zip" and "SID.Splinter.Cell.v2.0.NTSC.Xbox-Hq.zip."

  Transfer these onto the Xbox memory card. You can use a program like "Action Replay," or you can use an FTP client.

  Start Splinter Cell and start a new game by pressing A. Select the save game called "Linux." Select Check Points on the following screen. After about 10 seconds you will be greeted with a bule screen and a menu.

  Back up both the MS files and the Mod files by selecting "Create MS Backup" and "Create Mod Backup." Not selecting these will make it almost impossible to restore your Xbox if anything goes wrong.

  Install the Softmod by selecting that action from the menu. Select a dashboard to install from one of the options below, either the Evolution X or the Unleash X dashboards are available. Select one and install it.

  Restart your Xbox once the dashboard has been installed and the new dashboard should load up and allow you to use a number of new features.
