How to Play SNES With Hacks

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES, marked a major improvement over the original, 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System in key ways: its graphics were better, its games were more compact and it let gamers save their progress on games, so you no longer had to beat Super Mario Brothers in a single outing. One important thing remained the same, however: SNES games, like NES games before them, could be hacked with aid of cheat codes and little cartridge called the Game Genie.

Search for cheat codes for your games before looking into a buying a Game Genie. A lot of SNES games had cheats that you could activate by entering a string of button commands. The trouble is, there's no such thing as a standard game hack or cheat -- you can't just press "A," "B," "up," "down," "Start" and "Select" in any game and expect results. Cheats and hacks are always title-specific, but you can find SNES cheats easily enough online.

Buy and use a Game Genie if standard cheat codes aren't enough for you. The Game Genie is a secondary cartridge for the SNES system and for the original NES. Insert your game into the Game Genie and then insert the Game Genie into the SNES. Turn on the system to load the Game Genie interface, which allows you to enter Game Genie codes before launching the game.

Refer to a Game Genie codes list like that at GameGenie.com to find hacks for your specific games. Say you mean to get down to business with "Contra 3." If you enter "22BB-AD01" into the Game Genie window before launching the game, you'll have infinite lives in all side-scrolling levels. Or chose from one of 50-plus hacks for "Final Fantasy 3."

Launch the game from the Game Genie menu and play it with your hacks. You can always reset the system to clear the hacks or take the game out of the Game Genie to play it normally.
