How to Install XBMC Using Action Replay

XBMC is an open-sourced entertainment software developed by Sigma Designs that you can install on a modified Xbox console. Modifying your Xbox system requires a handful of specific files and programs, the Splinter Cell game disc and an Action Replay. You can modify your Xbox system yourself, if it is not already modded, and install XBMC. The whole process is challenging and requires you to know how to use an FTP client.

    • 3

Type "/msg xbins !list" into the chat window. Press "Enter." This returns two automated private messages with log-in and password information for two FTP servers that contain the necessary files you need.

    • 4

Open your FTP client. Login to the first FTP server using the log-in and password information from the previous step.

    • 5

Navigate to the "/XBOX/exploits/_Packages/Softmod Installer Deluxe/" directory on the server. Download the following file: "Softmod.Installer.Deluxe.v2.0.Xbox-Hq.rar." Save the file to your computer desktop. The file is 18 MB and should typically take one to two minutes to download, depending on the speed of your connection.

    • 6

Log on to the second FTP server using the login and password information from step 3. Download the "XBMC-2.0.1-FINAL-FAT-T3CH.rar" file in the home directory. Save the file to your computer desktop.

    • 7

Right-click one of the compressed files, and then select "Extract All." Click "Browse," navigate to the desktop as the destination location and click "Extract." Repeat with the other compressed file that you downloaded.

    • 8

Insert the Action Replay disc that comes with the Xbox Action Replay into your computer optical drive. An installation window will appear. Click "Next" three times, and then click "Install." Click "Finish" once the status bar disappears and the installation completes.

    • 9

Connect the Action Replay to your computer using the included USB cable. Insert the 8 MB memory card that came with the Action Replay into the unit.

    • 10

Double-click the "Action Replay" icon on your desktop to open the software window.

    • 11

Double-click the "Softmod.Installer.Deluxe.v2.0.Xbox-Hq" folder on your desktop. Copy the following files within the folder:

      SID.Splinter.Cell.v2.0.NTSC.Xbox-Hq.zip

      SID.Splinter.Cell.v2.0.Xbox-Hq.zip

Right-click within the "PC Database" section in the middle column on the "Action Replay" device window. Select "Paste" to copy the files to the Action Replay.

    • 12

Drag the "Linux Installer" file from the "PC Database" section to the "Memory Card" section, which is located on the left column inside the "Action Replay" device window.

    • 13

Remove the "Action Replay" memory card. Insert it into the Xbox controller plugged into controller port one. Remove any games from the Xbox, and then start the console.

    • 14

Scroll up to "Memory." Press "A" on the Xbox controller. Scroll down to the memory card, and then press "A" again. Scroll through the files and select the "Install Linux" saved file on the Xbox memory card. Press the "right" button on the directional pad, and then select "Copy." Press "A" to copy the file to your Xbox hard drive. Turn off the Xbox, remove the memory card and plug it back into the Action Replay connected to your computer.

    • 15

Repeat steps 12 through 14, copying the "Splinter Cell LINUX_Profile" file this time.

    • 16

Turn the Xbox console off. Open the disc tray. Insert the Splinter Cell game disc. Start the Xbox console.

    • 17

Allow the game to load until the "Profiles" menu appears. Select "Linux" from the "Profiles" menu, and then press "A."
