How to Connect Xbox to Dial-Up and Broadband

If you own a Microsoft Xbox, you can connect to the Internet using either a dial-up or broadband connection. Dial-up Internet requires a phone line, while a broadband connection requires either a cable modem or a DSL box.

Instructions

  1. Dial-Up

    • 1

Turn the Xbox game console off. Connect one end of a phone line to an active phone jack and connect the other end to the phone jack on the back of the Xbox.

    • 2

Turn the Xbox on. The machine should automatically recognize the phone line's connection and will ask to test the connection. Select "Yes" to proceed. Allow the Xbox to test the dial up connection to ensure it is working properly.

    • 3

Select "OK" once it notifies you of the connection. If the connection is not working properly, check the connection between the Xbox and the wall jack to ensure that each is plugged in completely.

    Broadband

    • 4

Turn the Xbox game console off. Plug a network extender kit into a nearby wall outlet and connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the port on the device.

    • 5

Connect the other end to an available port on the broadband router that provides your Internet.

    • 6

Connect one end of a second Ethernet cable into the network extender kit and connect the other end to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox.

    • 7

Turn the Xbox console on. It will automatically recognize the connection and test it.
