My Xbox Won't Power On

Microsoft entered the video game console market in 2001 with the release of the Xbox. The console was a powerhouse for its time and presented a new idea of what a home console could offer. The downside of the console was that it suffered from bad DVD drives and power supply problems. Microsoft acknowledged these problems by switching DVD drive manufacturers and fixing the power supply, but early units could not be repaired. Microsoft offered new power cords to owners of these units, but electrical problems persisted.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that the power cord is completely plugged into the console. The power cord connects to the back of the unit.

    • 2

Plug in a replacement power cord. If the console still does not turn on, there is a problem with the power supply.

    • 3

Unplug the power cord and the connections to your TV. Using the Torx 20 screwdriver, remove the six screws on the bottom of the console and open it. Look at the power supply (the unit that the power cord plugs into). Make sure there are no loose wires. If you see loose wires, re-solder them. Put the console back together and test it. If the unit still does not turn on, you will need to replace the power supply and/or console.

Locate a replacement power supply. Microsoft does not offer an official replacement, so a third-party power supply is required. There is no universal power supply available for the Xbox. Each power supply varies by manufacturer, so you will need to follow the included instructions for replacing the power supply.
