How to Set Up a Lag Switch

A lag switch is designed to delay local Internet traffic. It is installed on your home network, typically on your computer or video game console. A basic lag switch requires an Ethernet cable spliced with a light switch. When activated, it temporarily blocks traffic between your gaming device and the Internet. When you flip the switch, you will appear frozen in the game even though you are still playing, so when the lag stops, the game will catch up, giving you a sudden advantageous burst.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the Ethernet cable from both your computer and the router or modem. Carefully strip about an inch of the Ethernet cable cover to expose the wires beneath, but do not cut the wires themselves.

    • 2

Carefully cut the solid green wire without cutting any of the other wires. If your cable does not have a green wire, you will need to cut the orange striped wire instead.

    • 3

Connect the two ends of the wire that you just cut to the metal conductors on the sides of the light switch.

    • 4

Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your modem and the other end into the main Ethernet port of your router or modem.
