Wii Features & Specs

Nintendo introduced the Wii in 2006, offering an innovative approach to gaming with its motion-control interface. By August 10, 2010, Nintendo broke records in console sales by moving 30 million units in 45 months, beating the PlayStation 2's record by over a year. The console offers a plethora of features and hardware, some included with each Wii and others available for purchase or download.
  1. Included Hardware

    • In addition to the console itself, each Wii includes one Wii Remote Plus controller, one Nunchuk controller, a sensor bar, one standard composite cable and a power cord. Players use the controllers for basic interactions with the system, including menu navigation and game play. The sensor bar communicates with the controllers. The composite cable connects to the TV and supports standard resolution outputs. The power cord is for the console and is intended for use with 120-volt alternating current.

    Additional Hardware

    • Nintendo offers additional hardware that can enhance the Wii experience but is not required to use the Wii. Additional gaming hardware includes the Classic Controller Pro, the Wii MotionPlus, the Wii Wheel, and additional Wii Remote Plus controllers and Nunchuk controllers. Other options include SD card-slot covers, game disc cases, component output cords, lens cleaning kits and Wii Remote jackets.

    Included Software

    • Each Wii includes the Wii Menu, "Wii Sports," "Wii Sports Resort" and access to the Wii Shop Channel. The Wii Menu is the console's operating system, and "Wii Sports" and "Wii Sports Resort" are video games that each include a number of mini-games. Each Wii system allows users to create their own avatars, called Miis. The Wii Shop Channel is an online feature for users to interact with other players and find additional Nintendo content.

    Technical Specifications

    • Nintendo has detailed only some of the internal component specifications the Wii. This device has a 729-megahertz central processing unit and a 243-megahertz graphics processing unit. It has 512 megabytes of internal memory and 1T-SRAM. There are four ports for GameCube controllers, two GameCube memory card slots, two USB 2.0 slots and an SD memory card slot. The Wii does not play DVDs or CDs, though workarounds unapproved by Nintendo exist.

    Internet Features

    • The Wii can connect to the Internet with a Wii LAN Adapter to a wired setup or wirelessly to an 802.11b/g network. Within the Wii Shop Channel, Nintendo offers the Check Mii Out Channel, Everybody Votes Channel and Downloadable Games. Check Mii Out is for users to interact online with other players using their Miis. Everybody Votes is for fun polls on various topics, and Downloadable Games offers Nintendo games for users to browse, purchase and download. As of October 2010, Netflix can stream disc-free to Wii consoles.
