How to Troubleshoot Super NES

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is an outdated gaming console that uses game cartridges, or Game Paks, instead of discs, and because it is an old system it tends to go "on the fritz" relatively often. According to the official Nintendo website, telephone support for the Super NES, popular in the early '90s, has been discontinued. However, several troubleshooting tips can help solve common problems regarding power, audio/video, and Game Paks.

Instructions

  1. Power

    • 1

Check the console's AC connection to a power outlet, making sure that it is plugged in tightly. Unplug the power cord from the back of the console and plug it back in to guarantee a firm connection.

    • 2

Look for the "Nintendo" logo on the AC adapter. If your adapter shows anything other than this official logo, then it is an unlicensed product and may not be compatible with your console.

    • 3

Plug a working appliance into the outlet to confirm that the outlet works. If the outlet is broken, purchase an extension cord to run your Super NES from another power source.

    Sound/Video Problems

    • 4

Check that the yellow and red AV cables are firmly connected to your TV's input ports. The red cord is the audio cord, so make sure that the cord is plugged into the red input and the yellow video cord is plugged into the yellow input.

    • 5

Turn your console's power switch off and eject the Game Pak. A bad connection to the Game Pak can temporarily remove sound or video. Look in the bottom of the cartridge for any excessive dust or obstruction, and press the cartridge back down firmly into the console. If the problem persists, repeat this step to eliminate the possibility of a temporary bad connection.

    • 6

If there is still no sound, check to see if your Super NES is also connected to a device other than your TV, such as an amplifier or a stereo receiver. If your console is connected to one of these devices, make sure that the device is turned on and the volume is set to an audible level.

    Game Doesn't Play

    • 7

Remove the Game Pak and press it down firmly into the console until it snaps into place. The side with the game title and the graphics should face forward. If you remove the Game Pak with the power still on, the picture will freeze until your hit the "Reset" button or turn off the console.

    • 8

Unplug all unnecessary accessories so that the Game Pak can function with no interference. If this solves the problem, your accessories may be incompatible with your Super NES.

    • 9

Connect a different Game Pak to the console. If this Game Pak works correctly, then the previous cartridge is broken.
