How to Play Guitar Hero Without a Guitar

Xbox 360

  Turn the game console on and insert the disc. Do not turn a guitar on if it is present or the console might attempt to identify it as a controller.

  Turn on your Xbox 360 game controller or, if it's wired, connect it to one of the Xbox's USB ports. Wait until the game console detects the controller. If it doesn't detect the wireless controller right away, press the "Connect" button found both at the very top of the game controller and on the front side of the Xbox.

  Use the controller to navigate through the game's menus and choose a song or start playing Career Mode.

  Use the left trigger to strum any green notes, the left bumper for any red notes, the right trigger for any blue notes and the right bumper to strum any yellow notes. Press the A button to strum any orange notes and use the controller's left or right joystick to activate the whammy bar. Use either the D-Pad or "Back" button to activate the game's "Star Power."

PlayStation 3

  Insert the game disc to turn the game console on. Press the eject button on the console to take out any present discs before attempting to insert the game.

  Turn on your SIXAXIS controller and wait until it syncs with the PlayStation 3.

  Use the controller to navigate through the game's menus and choose a song or start playing Career Mode.

  Use the controller's L2 button to strum any green notes, the L1 button for any red notes, the R2 button for any blue notes and the R1 button to strum any yellow notes. Use the "X" face button to strum any orange notes and left joystick to activate the whammy bar. Use the D-Pad to activate the game's "Star Power."

Wii

  Turn on the game console and insert the game disc. Use the Wii remote to start the game from the system menu.

  Use the controller to navigate through the game's menus and choose a song or start playing Career Mode.

  Press the "1" button to strum any blue notes, the "2" button for any orange notes, the "B" button for any green notes and press right on the remote's D-Pad to strum any red notes. Press up on the remote's D-Pad to activate the game's "Star Power" and shake the controller to activate the whammy bar.
