How to Repair an N64 Controller

Nintendo 64 consoles may be an older gaming system, but the systems are still popularly played by young and old. The joystick, or analog stick, on a Nintendo 64 is perhaps the most common part to fail on many controllers because players are constantly using it to move characters around from level to level. In a few minutes time, however, you can easily fix your Nintendo 64 controller and be on your way to many more hours of gaming fun.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip the Nintendo 64 controller over so that all the button are facing your work surface and you can only see the back of the controller. Remove the screws from the back of the controller; there are nine. Place the screws in a small cup.

    • 2

Remove the back of the controller. You will see a gray plastic casing located in the center of the controller. This is where the thumb-stick is located.

    • 3

Remove the Z button. The Z button is held in place just below the thumb-stick. Be careful not to pull or tug on the cable that connects the button to the main circuit board of the controller.

    • 4

Remove the screws on the thumb-stick. Only remove the silver screws, not the black screws at the bottom.

    • 5

Remove the thumb-stick by unplugging it from the blue plug on the right. This may require a little force.

    • 6

Place the new thumb-stick into the controller. You can purchase these from game stores or reuse one from another controller that still has a working joystick. Plug the blue plug back in, insert the silver screws, and place the Z button back into the center of the module. Place the back of the controller back on the controller and screw in the nine screws removed earlier.
