How to Mod an XBox With a PC

Since the Xbox is so similar to a computer, many users have been wondering how they could turn it into something more like a Linux based computer. People with advanced knowledge of the Xbox game console have even gone as far as to create a whole new operating system to modify the dashboard and the way that you can load programs onto the unit. Once this new operating system has been installed on your Xbox, you can have a whole new machine entirely.

      Turn on your Xbox console at the power button. Wait for the "Home" screen to load. Insert a CD from your music collection into the DVD tray of the console and press the small button under the power button to close the DVD tray. When the Xbox music player loads the CD, highlight a song and select "Copy" from the menu. Wait for the song to copy and eject the music CD from the console.

      Turn on your computer. Download the "Xboxhdm" software to your computer's desktop. Click on the program and decompress the folder back to your desktop. You can choose the desktop in the window that pops up.

      Click on the "ndure-3.1.exe" program in the folder. Check all of the options except for the "Kernel Selection" tab. Save this information to your desktop. Go through the menus as prompted and click "Quit" when have completed this.

      Open the folder by clicking on it. Click on the "ndure" file and drag it to the "Linux" folder. Inside the "Linux" folder drag the "ndure" file to the "Ndure" folder. Double-click on the "iso-win.bat" file inside that folder. This will create the "Linux.iso" file.

      Open your CD burning software and insert a blank CD into the CD tray on your computer. Choose "Data CD" from the menu of which kind of CD you want to burn. Drag the "Linux.iso" file into your burning software. Click "Burn." Wait for it to finish.

      Turn off your Xbox console and remove the screws from underneath the rubber feet on the bottom of the Xbox with your screwdriver. Pull the top of the Xbox off of the console to reveal the components. Remove the screws holding the DVD drive to reveal the hard drive sitting underneath it.

      Turn off your computer. Open the computer tower using your screwdriver. When you can see all of the components, unplug the IDE cable from the motherboard. This will be labeled "IDE 1" or "Master." Click the jumper cable to "Master" on the motherboard.

      Turn on the computer and wait for it to boot from the CD you burned.

      Turn on your Xbox console. Load the song that you copied when you get to the main screen. Press the "A" button on your Xbox controller to play the song.

      Pull the cable connected to the hard drive out. Plug the IDE cable from your computer into the back of the hard drive.

      Press the "1" key on your computer's keyboard. Type "xbrowser" into the command prompt and hit the "Enter" key.

      Choose the "Ndure" folder from the list that pops up. Do this again on the next screen. Select "1" on the following screen. Press the "Q" button to quit when the installation is finished.

      Turn off your computer at the power button. Turn off your Xbox console at the power button. Turn the DVD jumper cable back to "Slave" and pull the IDE cable out of the Xbox hard drive. Put it back in the port on the motherboard. Close the computer tower by replacing all of the screws.

      Plug the IDE cable from the Xbox console back into the hard drive. Put the Xbox back together. Turn the Xbox console back on and wait for the installation screen to pop up. Choose the "XBMC" program from the list that pops up. Select this by pressing the "X" button on your Xbox controller.

      Choose the "Network" option from the screen. Enter "xbox" as the username and the password fields. Type "21" into the "Port" selection. Press the "X" button.

      Choose the "XBMC" folder on the left hand side of the window that pops up. Copy this folder into the dashboard. Follow the prompts that appear on the screen. Turn the Xbox console off. Turn the Xbox back on and you are finished.
