Instructions

Unplug everything from the Xbox and your Internet router. Your setup probably includes the Xbox, your computer, your router and a cable modem. Shut down the Xbox console. Unplug the Internet connection from the Xbox, then the router and the cable modem so everything is disconnected.

    • 2

Turn on the Xbox console. Turn on the cable modem and wait until you see the "Activity" light flash to tell you that there is an Internet connection. Turn on your wireless router. Wait for it to connect to the Internet. There will be a small light that tells you it is connected.

    • 3

Plug your Xbox's Ethernet cable into one of the open ports in the back of the router. Go to the Xbox Live dashboard and see if you can get online.

    • 4

Check over the compatibility list on the Xbox Live website to make sure that the router you are using is compatible with the Xbox console. If your router is not compatible, you will not be able to get online. Also check one of the links on the same page to determine whether the wireless bridge of your gateway is blocking your connection to the Internet.

    • 5

Log in to your router from your computer to see if the Firewall settings are preventing you from connecting to the Xbox Live server. Some routers will have Firewall settings as a default, and they should be turned off when trying to gain access to outside servers.

    • 6

Determine whether your router is actually working. You can plug your computer into the router directly from an Ethernet cable into the port that you are trying to use with your Xbox console. The Ethernet port may not be working on your router.

    • 7

Plug your Xbox console into the cable modem directly. Take the Ethernet cable coming from your Xbox and plug it into the back of the cable modem where you had your connection to the router. Going directly into a cable modem will let you know if the problem is in the router or the Xbox itself.
