How to Hook Up Video Games Through a VCR

Hooking up video game systems to a television requires the use of audio/video cables, but not all televisions offer these red, white and yellow inputs. You can use a VCR to convert the signal from an A/V connection to a coaxial cable connection. The VCR takes the place of a RF modulator, which is a specifically designed device for hooking up RCA-type connections from a video game (or other component) to an older TV.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the RCA A/V cable to the back of the video game system in the "A/V OUT" jacks. Match the colors of the connectors to the jacks, such as red to red, white to white and yellow to yellow.

    • 2

Hook the other end of this cable to the back of the VCR using the "A/V IN" jacks. Match the colors of the connectors to the jacks.

    • 3

Connect a coaxial cable to the VCR using the "RF OUT" jack. Attach the other end of this cable to the back of the television using the "RF IN" jack.

    • 4

Select either channel 3 or 4 on the back of the VCR. The VCR will need to be turned on and the television tuned to the same channel (3 or 4) selected on the VCR for the video game hookup to work.
